A free Smallpdf alternative for PDF to Excel
Smallpdf gets the job done, until you hit the two-free-files-a-day wall or get nudged toward a Pro plan. If all you want is to pull a table out of a PDF into Excel, here is a free alternative that lives in your browser, with no daily cap and no account.
Smallpdf is a solid web suite, but its PDF-to-Excel path has the same shape as most online converters: upload your file, wait, download, and after a couple of conversions you are asked to sign up or pay. For occasional one-off jobs that is fine. For anyone converting statements or reports regularly, the upload step and the daily limit get old fast.
The alternative: a one-click Chrome extension
Convert PDF to Excel is a free Chrome extension that reads the PDF you are already viewing and exports its table as Excel or CSV, without leaving the page.
- Add the extension to Chrome and open your PDF.
- Click the extension icon. It detects the table and rebuilds it column by column.
- Export to Excel (.xlsx) or CSV.
- Download an editable file, no upload screen and no daily counter.
How it compares
The two tools solve the same task in different places. A few differences that tend to matter:
- Daily limit. Smallpdf's free tier stops at two files a day. The extension has no daily file cap for text PDFs.
- Upload. Smallpdf works by uploading to its servers. The extension reads text PDFs locally in your browser, so the file stays on your machine.
- Sign-up. No account is needed to convert with the extension.
- Where it runs. The extension works on the PDF already open in your tab, instead of a separate upload-and-download site.
What it does and does not do
The extension converts PDF tables to Excel or CSV, and goes the other way with Excel to PDF. Text-based PDFs are free; scanned or image-only PDFs use an optional, opt-in AI mode for OCR, covered in our guide on converting a scanned PDF to Excel. It is a focused table converter, not a full PDF suite with merge, sign and compress, so if you need those, a web tool is still the place. For getting data out of a PDF, this is faster.
