How to transcribe a Zoom recording
You have a Zoom recording of a meeting, interview or lesson, and you need it as text, for notes, minutes or a quick summary. Zoom's own transcript is patchy: it depends on your plan, it can be missing, and it is a pain to export. Here is how to get a clean, full transcript in one click, from any recording that plays in your browser.
The key thing to know: this works on a recording, not a live call in the desktop app. Once your Zoom meeting is saved as a cloud recording and you open the share link, it plays like any video on a web page. That is where a browser transcript tool can read it, whether or not Zoom generated its own transcript.
The fastest way: a one-click Chrome extension
Transcribe Video to Text is a free Chrome extension that builds the transcript of the recording you are watching, right on the page. No file to upload, no account, no link-pasting into another site.
- Open your Zoom cloud recording share link so it plays in Chrome.
- Click the extension icon. It reads the recording and builds the transcript in seconds.
- The text appears in a side panel, laid out speaker by speaker with timestamps.
- Copy the part you need, or export the whole thing to Word, TXT or SRT.
Because it works in your browser, it does not care which Zoom plan you are on, and it handles recordings in over 50 languages.

Sometimes. On paid plans Zoom can produce an audio transcript for cloud recordings, and if you have it, great. But it is off by default, unavailable on free accounts, and when it is there it is awkward to copy or reformat. The browser approach sidesteps all of that: if the recording plays, you can transcribe it, with the speaker layout and export options already built in.
What you can do with the transcript
- Write the minutes from a clean, speaker-by-speaker record instead of scrubbing the video.
- Search the whole meeting to find the moment a decision was made.
- Export to Word (.docx) or TXT for notes, or SRT if you need captions.
- Summarize it with AI, paste the transcript into ChatGPT and ask for action items.
A note on privacy
Meeting recordings can be sensitive, so it is worth knowing how the transcript is made. For a recording that plays in the browser, the extension processes the audio through a transcription step and hands you the text; nothing is stored or sold, and you only run it on recordings you choose. If a meeting is confidential, make sure you have the right to transcribe it before you do.
What about other recordings?
The same extension works far beyond Zoom, on YouTube, Vimeo, Loom, Coursera and most sites where a video plays in your browser. If you also grab talks from the web, see our guides on getting a YouTube transcript and whether ChatGPT can transcribe a video.
