How to convert a bank statement PDF to Excel
Your bank gives you a statement as a PDF, but you need those transactions in a spreadsheet, for a budget, a bookkeeper or your taxes. Retyping every row by hand is slow and error-prone. Here is how to turn a statement PDF into editable Excel or CSV in one click, with each date, description and amount in its own cell.
A bank statement is really just a table: one row per transaction, columns for date, description, amount and balance. The problem is that a PDF locks that table into a fixed page layout. Copy and paste it into Excel and everything collapses into a single messy column, with amounts glued to descriptions. To get usable data you need a tool that reads the table structure and rebuilds the rows and columns properly.
The fastest way: a one-click Chrome extension
Convert PDF to Excel is a free Chrome extension built for exactly this. It reads the transaction table in your statement and exports it as an editable Excel or CSV file, without retyping.
- Add the extension to Chrome and open your bank statement PDF.
- Click the extension icon. It detects the transaction table and its columns.
- Choose Excel (.xlsx) for a spreadsheet or CSV to import into other apps.
- Download the file, with dates, descriptions and amounts each in their own cell.

Add to Chrome · freeExcel or CSV: which should you pick?
Pick Excel if you want to work with the numbers directly, sort by date, sum a column of spending, or drop the transactions into a budget sheet. Pick CSV if you are feeding the data into something else: most accounting and budgeting apps import a CSV of transactions directly, one row each. Both keep a value like 1,488.00 in a single cell instead of splitting it at the comma.
Is it safe to convert a bank statement?
Financial data deserves care, so it is worth knowing where your file goes. With a normal, text-based statement, the kind you download from online banking, the conversion happens right in your browser and the PDF is never uploaded. Only scanned or photographed statements need the optional AI mode, which you switch on yourself. In other words, for the common case, a downloaded statement PDF, your numbers never leave your machine.
What about a scanned or photographed statement?
If your statement is a scan or a phone photo of a printed page, there is no text layer to read, only a picture. Turn on the AI mode, which runs OCR to recognise the figures in the image and then rebuilds the table. A sharp, straight scan converts far better than a dim photo shot at an angle, so scan in good light and keep the page flat. A quick check before you file it
Statements are mostly clean, tabular data, so results are usually spot on. Still, before you hand the sheet to a bookkeeper or import it, glance down the amount column for anything off, a running balance that does not add up, or a stray character in a description. Text-based statements almost never need fixing; scans are the ones worth a second look.
